Loch Ard Gorge

A mysterious history and secrets

Just a few minutes up the Great Ocean Road we find the Loch Ard Gorge.

We’ll take a short walk to the Gorge, along the sand and beside the water. Look up to the breathtaking sight of the towering walls.

Not only spectacularly beautiful, the Loch Ard gorge also has a secret history. It is the site of a shipwreck from 1878. A large clipper ship named the Loch Ard from England beached on nearby Muttonbird Island.

There were 54 passengers on board and only two survived:  15 year old Tom Pearce and 17 year old Evea Carmichael.

In memory of these two brave survivors, the two remaining rock pillars of the gorge are named Tom and Eva!
